Seating Specifications & Warranties

  1. Frame: Upholstered (non-exposed) frame lumber shall be sound grade, kiln dried (7%), mixed hardwoods for strength and dimensional stability. Spring rails shall only be oak or similar hardwood when applicable. Plywood parts, when used, shall be engineered in such a way to maintain structural strength and durability. When style includes exposed wood trim or integral exposed wood legs, all such parts shall be milled from kiln dried hardwood, premium grade selected free of visual and structural defects, maple or alternate hardwood.
  2. Frame Assembly: All stress points shall be glued and stapled with 16-gauge wire and/or screwed, to achieve maximum strength. Corner blocks and/or steel brackets reinforce critical joints. All other joints shall be glued and fastened with heavy-duty frame staples. Glue shall be polyvinyl acetate. Exposed wood parts shall be sanded and then finished as specified.
  3. Legs and Casters: Legs shall be fastened to the frame with #10 wood screws in the hardwood frame structure. If carpet or soft linoleum is the primary surface on which the chairs will be used, it is recommended to use two (2) front casters, two (2) back casters, or all four (4) casters on both the front and back. The weight of the chair occupant combined with the textured surface of carpet or linoleum will keep the chair from sliding (putting undo stress on the frame).
  5. Standard Wood Finish Process:The process is fully approved and licensed by the EPA and meets the test requirements of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association, with no visual effect resulting from those tests. Standard finish shall be comprised of a high solid (over 30%), catalyzed, conversion varnish offering superior resistance to abrasives and chemicals commonly found in a hospital environment. This material must be highly resistant to hot/cold checking and successfully tested to temperature ranges between 120 deg. F to –5 deg. F. Akin reserves the right to change/alter finishes without prior notice.
The application process shall be as follows:

    1. Exposed wood is first sanded using 150 grit paper and inspected.
    2. Application of color coats (stain, toner or solid colors) per order specification, using HVLP guns. Inspect for color.
    3. Application of conversion varnish sealer. Inspection and reinforcement as needed.
    4. Oven cure at 120 deg. F for five minutes.
    5. Sealer sanding.
    6. Oven cure at 120 deg. F for five minutes.

All foam, at minimum, shall meet California Technical Bulletin 117-2013, Motor Vehicle Safety Standard MVSS 302 and international standard BS 5852 – Crib-5. Foam cushioning is specifically selected for comfort and durability.
    1. Backs: ILD-15 to 20 range, 1.0 lb. density.
    2. Cushions: ILD-28 to 32 range, 1.8 to 2.1 lb. density range.
    3. Outer arms/backs are fitted with heavy grade cardboard or synthetic fabric stapled to the frame members and padded with foam.
    4. All loose cushions (only) shall have HR Foam of ILD-30/2.0 lb. density. Foam shall meet flammability requirements of TB-117.
  7. Structures feature the following methods:
    1. Certain back structures feature sinuous wire springs (of a specified gauge) fastened to spring rails with sound insulated steel clips. Steel tie wires are fastened across the springs. Springs are covered with synthetic spring insulating covers and stapled securely to frame members.
    2. Semi-attached back cushion designs are constructed over nylon webbing stretched across back rails.
    3. Seat decks are supported on sinuous springs fastened securely to the spring rails with sound insulated clips. Steel tie wires further secure individual springs. Springs are covered with a layer of 1/2″ synthetic fiber deck pad; decking fabric is upholstered over the spring deck.
